About Jess
Hi! I'm Jess, a Hong Kong illustrator and ceramic artist based in London.
Tongsy comes from my Chinese name, and it's the name I use for my creative practice as a way to stay connected to my background and roots.
My work is inspired by the animals, people, and everyday moments that make life interesting. I love creating playful ceramics, lino prints, and illustrations that bring a little joy and humour into the world.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope my work makes you smile. (ミⓛᆽⓛミ)✧
My Thoughts on Making
I think these days more and more people are no longer used to making things with their own hands. We often buy objects from shops, where they are mass-produced in large professional factories. There's nothing wrong with that, but I've always believed that being able to make tools and objects ourselves is an important skill, and one of the things that makes us human.
For me, making by hand helps me slow down and be present in the moment. It gives me space to process my thoughts, reduce stress, and express my creativity.
This is something I hope to share with others, whether through the work I create or the classes I teach.
One thing that is especially important to me is that I value joy more than skill. Professional skills are wonderful, and they take years of practice to master. But enjoying the process is even more important. Curiosity, play, and the willingness to create and learn are what keep us moving forward, not only as makers, but as people.
